About the Kazbegi region
Kazbegi is the high-mountain region around Stepantsminda in the Greater Caucasus, about three hours north of Tbilisi along the Georgian Military Road. Its best-known view is Gergeti Trinity Church, standing at 2,170 metres beneath the glaciers of Mount Kazbek (5,047 m).
The drive is part of the trip: the Ananuri fortress above the Zhinvali reservoir, the ski resort of Gudauri and the Jvari Pass at 2,379 metres all lie on the way. In summer, the Juta and Truso valleys offer some of the most accessible hikes in the Caucasus, with alpine meadows and guesthouses at the trailheads.
Visit from June to September for hiking, or from December to April for skiing in Gudauri. Heavy snow can close the road for a few hours or days in winter, so leave a spare day before a flight.
