About Lechkhumi
Lechkhumi is a small historic region in the hills of western Georgia, along the Tskhenistskali river, with the town of Tsageri as its centre. It lies about two hours by car from Kutaisi and sees far fewer visitors than neighbouring Racha or Svaneti.
The region is best known for wine: Usakhelauri, one of the rarest Georgian grape varieties, makes a naturally semi-sweet red wine here, and the village of Tvishi gives its name to a well-known semi-sweet white. Lailashi and Tvishi are pleasant stops for wine tasting and village walks.
Lechkhumi combines easily with Racha (Ambrolauri) on a western Georgia road trip. Roads are paved to the main villages, but mountain side roads are narrow, so plan to drive in daylight.
