Village Uplistsikhe is an abandoned cliffside village with a rich history, located on the banks of the Mtkvari River near the city of Gori. It's a unique place to explore, with its cave town and abandoned village.

Village Uplistsikhe is situated on the banks of the Mtkvari River, several kilometers away from the city of Gori. The village and the nearby cave town are now abandoned, but they still hold a lot of history and charm.

History

The village of Uplistsikhe has a long and complex history. Until the beginning of the 20th century, it had a three-story bell tower and two hall-type churches, which were unfortunately destroyed by a large earthquake in 1920. The village was once home to around 200 families, but they all resettled across the river in the 1970s.

There are different stories about why the inhabitants left the village. Some say it was due to climate change, while others claim it was because of the discovery of ancient burials during archaeological excavations, which required the locals to move.

Things to See

Today, visitors can still see the remains of the old village, including the houses on the river bank. The area is also home to ancient burials and other historical sites, which are definitely worth exploring.
