Saro and Khizabavra

Things to See

Saro Village is home to a remarkable architectural complex, featuring a cyclopean fortress built around the same time as the Egyptian pyramids. The fortress is constructed from massive stone blocks, with some blocks left uncut, and was built in three stages over time.

The complex also includes the Archangel Church, which dates back to the 7th and 8th centuries and was restored in the 19th century. In Khizabavra Village, you can see ancient Meskhetian half-underground shelter houses with beautiful wooden ceilings and traditional ovens.

The village is also home to the Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, built in the 19th century, and the oldest church in the village, Khiza Church.

Nature and Wine

Khizabavra Village is situated in the highest mountainous winemaking region in Georgia, Meskheti, where vines grow at an altitude of 1,590 meters above sea level. The village is home to ancient Meskhetian varieties of grapes, some of which date back to the time of Queen Tamar in the 12th century.
