Aspindza

Aspindza, the center of Aspindza Municipality, boasts a history that dates back to pre-Christian times. The area flourished during the Middle Ages, with the construction of many castles and monasteries. Its strategic location, however, made it a frequent target of invasions by Persia and the Ottoman Empire.

History and Monuments

The region is home to several significant historical monuments, including the 12th-13th century monastery complex of Vardzia. This ancient site features an impressive cave complex with over six hundred rooms, twenty-eight wine cellars, and fifteen churches. The construction of Vardzia was initiated by King Giorgi III and completed by his daughter, Queen Tamar.

Other notable sights in the Aspindza Municipality include the villages of Khizabavra and Saro. The latter is home to two megalithic fortresses from antiquity and a 7th-century church. The region also features the fortified cities of Tmogvi and Khertvisi, built atop rocky mountains, and the cave complex and desert monastery of Vanis Kvabebi.

Aspindza offers a wealth of historical and cultural attractions. Visitors can explore the partially collapsed monastery's ancient halls, where the best-preserved frescoes can be found in the Dormition of the Virgin Church. One of these frescoes depicts a young Queen Tamar standing next to her father with a model of the church in her hands.
