Rustavi
Rustavi is one of Georgia's oldest cities, offering a mix of history, culture, and industrial heritage. Located 27 kilometers southeast of Tbilisi, it's a city with a rich past and plenty to explore.
Rustavi is the administrative center of the Kvemo Kartli Region, situated on both sides of the Mtkvari River. With a history dating back to the middle Bronze Age, the city has a long and storied past. Over time, the region became more densely populated, with agriculture, animal husbandry, and winemaking developing as key industries.
The History of Rustavi
Rustavi's history is marked by significant events, including its establishment as a city by the 4th century BCE. The city was an important stop on caravan trade routes, leading to the development of various crafts. However, it was destroyed during the Mongol campaigns of the 13th century, and its restoration didn't truly begin until the 1940s with the construction of a metallurgical factory.

Today, visitors can explore the ruins of Rustavi Fortress, which features frescoes and is a unique site in Georgia. The city also boasts a large park with facilities for sports, relaxation, and entertainment, including a skatepark, picnic areas, and an artificial lake. The Rustavi Historical Museum and the Drama Theatre are also worth visiting.
In September, the city hosts Rustavkalakoba, a folk festival celebrating its history and culture.
