Sujuna, a village in the Samegrelo region, boasts a rich history dating back to Antiquity. The village is situated on the shores of the Abasha River, between Abasha and Poti, and is believed by some researchers to be the site of the ancient Georgian kingdom of Colchis.

History

The village has a fascinating past, with the legendary king of Colchis, Aeëtes, said to have founded the harbor of Sujuna over three thousand years ago. In the late Middle Ages, Sujuna was the residence of the influential Chkondidelis bishops in western Georgia.

In the 19th century, the village became a center for commerce in Samegrelo, with Jewish families settling there to develop maritime trade. Sujuna was also the birthplace of several notable Georgians, including the country's first millionaire, Akaki Khoshtaria, and the poet Dutu Megreli.

Things to See

The village is home to several historic buildings, including the 19th-century domed St. George Church, a beautiful architectural monument that has retained its original form. The local synagogue, also dating back to the 19th century, is another notable landmark.

A stunning palace, built in 1915 by Italian architects, is a must-visit attraction. The palace was gifted to the village by Akaki Khoshtaria and now serves as a testament to his legacy.
