Nikortsminda is a masterpiece of 11th-century Georgian architecture in Racha, known for its unique and richly ornamented facade and beautiful frescoes.
Nikortsminda Cathedral, dedicated to Saint Nicholas, is located in Upper Racha, Ambrolauri municipality. Built between 1010-1014, during the reign of King Bagrat III, it represents one of the most brilliant examples of Georgian Golden Age architecture. The cathedral is square in shape from the outside but has a five-apse, central-dome composition from the inside, making it architecturally unique.
The main pride of the cathedral is its rich and refined relief carvings on the facade, which include both religious scenes and various plant and animal motifs, as well as depictions of saints and fantastical creatures. The interior is adorned with brilliant frescoes from the 16th-17th centuries, including portraits of local feudal lords and secular figures.
Nikortsminda Cathedral is listed on UNESCO's World Heritage tentative list, underscoring its global cultural significance.
