Shatili

Shatili is a fascinating destination that offers a glimpse into the region's rich history and culture. This ancient village is situated in a stunning natural setting, surrounded by mountains and rivers.

The Unique Architecture of Shatili

The village is home to over sixty terraced towers, made up of crushed stone, cobblestones, and shale. These towers are tightly arrayed next to one another, making it impossible for people outside to see the movements of those within.

The Shatili complex comprises fortress-houses, living quarters in turrets, houses with threshing floors and flat roofs, and a meeting place, where the village elders would gather and discuss important issues.

How to Get to Shatili

To get to Shatili, take the road from Tbilisi that passes by Zhinvali Reservoir and through the beautiful Aragvi River valley. The journey takes you through several abandoned villages, including Barisakho, Lebiskari, and Kistani.

From the Datvijvari Pass, the road heads downwards and follows the narrow Aghruni River Valley, eventually leading to the village of Shatili. Be careful when approaching herds, as they are often guarded by Caucasian sheepdogs.

Accommodation and Activities

While it's possible to explore Shatili in a day, it's recommended to spend the night in the village to avoid the long drive back to Tbilisi. You can pitch a tent on the banks of the Arghuni River or stay in one of the hotels set up in the towers.

Be sure to try the local Khevsuretian khinkhali, a delicious traditional dish. For a more immersive experience, consider staying in one of the family-run hotels in the surrounding area.
