The history of Dusheti dates back to the early antique era, with the first recorded mention of the area in 1215. The city was once the residence of the Aragvi noble family, where important cultural and literature traditions were established.

The area is also home to an early Christian community, with a 2nd-3rd century chapel discovered near the village of Tsilkani. The Patriarchate was first established here at the end of the 5th century, marking the beginning of the Christianization of the mountains.
