Baghdati is a small town located in the Imereti region, 20 km from Kutaisi. The town is situated on the banks of the Khanistskali River, 232 meters above sea level, and is known for its lush green surroundings.
History
The area has been inhabited since the Middle Ages, with the first historical mention of Baghdati dating back to the 17th century. In the 18th century, the Ottomans occupied the town and built a fortress, which was used as a prison. The name 'Baghdati' is derived from the Turkish word for 'God's Gift', although locals believe it refers to the town's beautiful gardens.
