History

Gonio has a rich history, with archaeological excavations indicating that the area was settled as early as the 8th-7th century BC. The town's former name, Apsaros, can be found in Georgian, Greek, and Latin sources, while the name Gonio first appeared in the 12th-13th centuries.

Gonio Fortress

The Gonio-Apsaros Fortress was built to protect the population from Byzantium and later from Ottoman Turkey. The fortress is surrounded by a fence welded with lime and fortified with 18 towers, and its rectangular construction covers an area of 44,460 square meters.
